Benson Hsu, MD, MBA, FAAP, FCCM
Chief Scientific Officer

Benson is a pediatric critical care physician at Sanford Children’s Hospital in South Dakota, serving a predominately rural population encompassing several Native American communities.

As a pediatric critical care leader at the American Academy of Pediatrics, he has authored several national clinical guidelines for inpatient pediatric care. Benson was previously on the corporate leadership team of Sanford Health, a large rural integrated delivery system, where he led the organization’s data analytics infrastructure and developed strategies for population health. An Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, Benson is an NIH funded researcher on behavioral economics and a recognized researcher with over 50 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts. He is a Bush Fellow and an Aspen Institute Health Fellow.

Benson has served on multiple medical missions to China, working as a pediatric cardiac intensivist and general pediatrician. He currently spends the majority of his free time trying not to be outsmarted by his son.

Jennifer Mascarenhas, MD
Chief Medical Officer

Jennifer is a seasoned patient care provider with over 2 decades of experience delivering critical care as an anesthesiologist, overseeing teams of residents, nurse anesthetists, and medical students.

Jennifer was a faculty member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City for over 14 years, and prior to that was an anesthesiologist at the University of California at San Francisco. Jennifer has experience with clinical research studies, diversity and inclusion efforts, institutional review boards, quality assurance, and medical ethics committees. Jennifer is a published author and is currently completing a master’s degree in Bioethics at Columbia University.

Jennifer has participated in medical missions around the world including Mexico, Nepal, and South Africa. She is an avid runner and has completed 3 NYC marathons for various charities.

Kirsten Axelsen
Executive Secretary

Kirsten is an economist, a consultant, and a Senior Policy Advisor to DLA Piper. She is a visiting scholar with the American Enterprise Institute and an Aspen Institute Health Fellow.

Kirsten was on the leadership team of Pfizer Inc’s $30 billion global innovative pharmaceutical business, where she led Strategy and Business Evaluation. Kirsten led multiple global reorganizations, and developed corporate strategy for emerging markets, digital technology and for a more patient-centric approach. She oversaw business development evaluation for rare disease, oncology, inflammation & immunology, and primary care. Kirsten also led Pfizer’s Global Policy team. She is a published author including on the impact of Medicaid preferred drug lists on health disparities and adherence to medicines.

Kirsten is a board member for Ramapo for Children, she worked in Ethiopia with the International Trachoma initiative and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise $1.6 million for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

Cyrena Gawuga, Ph.D, MSW
Director of Research

Cyrena is a scientist and macro social worker with extensive experience in collaborative research at the interface of neuroscience, pharmacology, and immunology.

During her training at Brown University, she authored publications on the influence of adverse childhood experiences on inflammation and health outcomes in adulthood. She most recently served as a research associate on a PCORI-funded, community-based participatory research program at Boston University School of Social Work. During this program, Cyrena assisted patients and caregivers with the execution of a study aimed at understanding how the relationship between patients of color and their providers influences the decision to participate in clinical research.

Cyrena has participated in patient advocacy and outreach for many years, serving as advisory board member for Patients Like Me and the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (now Beyond Celiac). She is a frequently-sought speaker and contributor on issues of equity and inclusion in patient leadership for the Medicine X program at Stanford University.

Raymond M. Williams, JD
Chair

Ray is the National Diversity & Inclusion Partner for DLA Piper. For the past 25 years, Ray has represented numerous companies in the life science and healthcare sectors.

Ray also has significant experience in a range of internal investigation, compliance, and regulatory matters, particularly within the life sciences and media, sports, and entertainment sectors.

Ray regularly counsels clients on a wide range of regulatory, risk management, due diligence, product labeling, public disclosure, policy and crisis-management issues. Recent examples include acting as lead counsel with Senator George Mitchell as the monitor for Penn State University, reviewing product liability risk associated with the acquisition of a pharmaceutical company, analyzing pre-launch materials of a new product to the market, and assessing grant agreement disclosures.

Ray is a frequent speaker and contributor to litigation journals and industry publications regarding both diversity issues and his substantive practice areas. On numerous occasions Ray has appeared as a panelist on the Law Journal television program and the American Law Journal television program. Ray has consistently been listed by The Legal 500 United States, Pennsylvania Super Lawyer, The International Who's Who of Life Sciences Product Liability Lawyers, and Euromoney's Life Science Star Guide as a top lawyer in his field.

Ray has used his legal skills to work on pro bono matters supported by his firm. Most recently, he successfully represented the Navajo Human Rights Commission and other Navajo plaintiffs regarding their unequal access to voting polls in San Juan, Utah.

Sung Poblete, PhD, RN
Vice Chair

Sung Poblete has made it her life’s work to fight cancer from all angles: galvanizing awareness, improving patient outcomes, and enabling cutting-edge research. Today, she is Chief Executive Officer of Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE).

Sung is FARE’s CEO, joining the organization in May 2022 from Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) where she served as Chief Executive Officer since 2011. She has an extensive and varied background, receiving Bachelor and Master of Science degrees, as well as a PhD in nursing, from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She began her teaching career at Rutgers over 25 years ago and continues to serve as a visiting associate professor at their School of Nursing. In 2016, Sung was inducted into Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni, joining a select group of more than 200 honorees across Rutgers’ 256-year history who have devoted time and energy to the greater good of society.

Early in her career, Sung held executive positions with a focus on patient outcomes and disease management. Notably, as vice president of clinical operations for a subsidiary of Fresenius Medical Care North America, she developed and ran national chronic kidney disease management programs. As executive director of the Oxford Health Plans Foundation, she facilitated grants that furthered research and programs aimed at improving health care delivery.

The recipient of numerous high-level research funding grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, and private foundations, Sung also sits on several Boards including the Executive Board of the Osteosarcoma Institute, Apricity Health, and Proteus Ocean Group.


 

Antonio Fernandez
Treasurer

Mr. Antonio Fernandez has dedicated his professional life to the development and management of healthcare programs for vulnerable, minority, and underserved populations.

In addition, Mr. Fernandez serves on the Board of Latinos for Healthcare Equity, and the Community Health Foundation of Puerto Rico where he also chairs the organization’s COVID-19 Task Force. Since the inception of the pandemic, he has played a key role in supporting the expansion of testing opportunities working as a Senior Consultant for CorePlus Laboratories in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

Mr. Fernandez began his career in behavioral health holding positions as mental health planner for the Dade-Monroe Mental Health Board, program director for Fellowship House Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center, and its NIMH Community Support Program replication site for services to chronically mentally ill adults. He expanded his scope of services to organize a statewide network of outreach training centers during the Cuban-Haitian entrant immigration crisis as part of an initiative of Florida International University’s Center for Latino Education.

While working as director of international programs and Vice President for Miami Children’s Hospital, he spearheaded the development of international clinical, educational, and research programs including the creation of a Pan-American telehealth and tele-education network at Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH). While at MCH, Mr. Fernandez led an initiative to utilize this network as the vehicle for the Pan-American Health Organization to launch its hemispheric AIDS response, supported by hemispheric tele-education and regional training programs. He served as Executive Director for the SSM Bridges International Center on Aging, which was part of the SSM Healthcare Ministries Corporation in New Jersey, where he directed the establishment of the SSM Foundation of the Dominican Republic, dedicated to the elderly and to designing sustainable inter-generational programs for developing countries.

Mr. Fernandez has served as Senior Vice President for Ramsay HMO, a publicly traded company, which was acquired by United Healthcare. Post-acquisition, the management transition team oversaw the Florida and Puerto Rico business development activities, and Mr. Fernandez eventually became CEO for United Healthcare Plans of Puerto Rico.

Mr. Fernandez founded and directed the Ponce Medical School Foundation’s Regional Extension Center for Health Information Technology, serving Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, under a cooperative agreement with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. He worked with Cognosante Consulting and NTT Data’s Independent Verification and Validation Project for Puerto Rico’s Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) and the Puerto Rico Medicaid Enrollment and Eligibility Projects. During his career, Mr. Fernandez has served as Senior Advisor and consultant to multiple healthcare provider and payer organizations.

Mr. Fernandez completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, as well as a Masters of Business Administration, and a Certificate in Healthcare Administration from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

Susan Peschin, MHS
Secretary

Susan Peschin is president and CEO at the Alliance for Aging Research, the leading national non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the pace of scientific discoveries and their application to improve the experience of aging and health.

Since 2012, Ms. Peschin has been a driving force in the growth and success of the organization. As a thought leader on many aging-related issues, she has led the Alliance in efforts to boost older adult immunization rates; increase NIH Alzheimer’s disease and aging research funding; raise awareness of geriatric cardiac issues; develop Talk NERDY to Me (NERDY-Nurturing Engagement in Research and Development with You), a PCORI-funded, older patient and family caregiver research engagement network; address costs of healthcare and value frameworks; and reform Medicare treatment access issues. She participates in major industry and policy symposiums around the country each year and has published opinion pieces in news outlets nationwide. Ms. Peschin currently serves on the Boards of Heart Valve Voice US and the King Farm Neighbors Village; and on the National Advisory Council for the National Institute on Aging at the NIH. Ms. Peschin earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Brandeis University, and a Masters of Health Sciences degree in Health Policy from the Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Carmen A. Peralta, MD, MAS

Dr. Peralta is Chief Medical Officer at Cricket Health and professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

At UCSF, she distinguished herself as a clinician investigator where she has published more than 150 research articles and received top academic awards including the American Heart Association Established Investigator Award. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, Harold Amos Faculty Development Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the National Kidney Foundation. At UCSF and the San Francisco VA Medical Center, she co-founded and served as inaugural Executive Director of the Kidney Health Research Collaborative (KHRC). Her research activities focus on 3 major areas: translational approaches to improving care of persons with kidney disease and reduce racial/ethnic disparities; hypertension, arterial stiffness, and kidney disease; and novel biomarkers for detection, classification, and risk stratification of early kidney disease. At Cricket Health, she is responsible for clinical design and strategy to deploy an integrated model of care for persons with kidney disease. She brings her deep experience in kidney disease and hypertension epidemiology and implementation science to build an evidence-based approach to kidney care.


Maimah Karmo

Maimah Karmo is the Founder/CEO of the Tigerlily Foundation and a seventeen-year survivor of triple negative breast cancer.

Under Maimah’s leadership, Tigerlily Foundation has launched national and global health initiatives and provided breast health, educational, empowerment, wellness and transformational programs focused on ending disparities for black women in our lifetime. A first-generation immigrant from Liberia who has experienced disparities first-hand, she is a leader in the women’s health field and works to eliminate disparities of age, stage and color.

Maimah has advocated with Members of Congress to ensure that young women had access to breast screening through the Protecting Access to Lifesaving Screening (PALS) legislation and has worked with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to launch national campaigns, serving as an Ambassador for National Women’s Health Week, an initiative of the Office of Women’s Health.

Maimah has appeared in USA Today, U.S. News, Oprah Magazine, Essence Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, Good Housekeeping, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Cure Magazine, and more. She has also been featured on Fox 5, ABC 7, CBS, the Oprah Winfrey Show, OWN, Good Morning America, the Today Show and more. Most dear to her heart is her 20-year-old daughter, Noelle.
